Mother of Bride Dress code
The bride’s dress gets most of the attention, but today we’re talking about another special look: the mother of the bride. Between helping with plans and getting ready to watch her daughter get married, Mom deserves an outfit she’s excited to wear too.
We’re sharing a few mother of the bride looks from weddings we’ve been part of, plus some tips to make finding the right dress easier.
Where to Start
Start with a quick chat with the bride. She may have a color in mind or a few inspiration photos saved, or she may just want you to wear something you love. Either way, knowing what she’s thinking helps narrow things down before you’ve opened twenty shopping tabs.
Then check the dress code. Black-tie calls for a floor-length gown, while cocktail or semiformal weddings leave room for midi or knee-length styles. Keep the venue in mind, too, especially if you’ll be outdoors.
Let’s Talk Color
You don’t have to match the bridesmaids exactly. A complementary shade ties everything together while giving you your own look. If you can’t picture it, put a photo of your dress next to the bridesmaid dresses.
White and ivory are best left to the bride unless she says otherwise, and very pale shades can look white in photos. Send her a picture before you buy to be safe.
And yes, black can absolutely work, especially for an evening wedding. Just make sure the couple is happy with it and the style suits the occasion.
Think Beyond the Fitting Room
A dress might look great in front of the mirror, but you’ll also be sitting through dinner, hugging approximately everyone, and hopefully dancing. Walk around, sit down, and make sure you aren’t constantly adjusting something.
Give your shoes the same thought. If the ceremony is on grass, consider how your heels will hold up. Bring the shoes you plan to wear to your alterations appointment so the length is right.
It also helps to share your outfit with the mother of the groom. A quick exchange of photos means one less thing to wonder about.
A Look That Feels Like You
This is a chance to have fun. Love a floral print? Go for it. Been waiting for a reason to wear a little sparkle? This is a pretty good occasion.
As you scroll through these photos, save the details you’re drawn to, whether it’s a color, neckline, or silhouette. You might find inspiration in something you hadn’t considered.
Leave yourself plenty of time to shop and alter, and try on the whole look before the big day. Then you’ll be ready for the photos, the happy tears, and all those hugs!
